The Rotary Club of Auckland established this scholarship in 1969 for “The Most Distinguished Graduate of the Year”.

This award was initiated by Dr Lloyd Richwhite, the then President of the Rotary Club of Auckland with the help of Professor Cecil Lewis, who was then Dean of the newly established Medical School at the University of Auckland.  It was established to enhance the long association between Rotary and the Medical Profession.
The Rotary Scholarship is regarded as a premier award by providing a generous monetary prize for furtherance of medical studies.  It is based on the University of Edinburgh’s Ettles Scholarship, which is widely recognised in Britain as being an award for outstanding excellence, many of its recipients having proceeded to eminent status in the medical profession.  It is hoped that the Rotary Scholarship will similarly hallmark those who receive it as being worthy of very senior leadership in medicine.  The recipient is chosen by the Dean of the Medical School whose recommendation is automatically accepted by the Club.
The current amount of the award is $5,000.

The Chenery Trust generously contributes $2,500 to the award and their assistance is acknowledged and much appreciated.
