Monday 5 October will be a Physical Meeting
The following week on Monday 5 October 2020, will be our first physical lunch for some time.  Our speaker will be the eminent QC Jim Farmer, who will talk to us about the Cannabis Act.  Venue details will be confirmed next week.

This Week’s Meeting
This week we heard from Caralise Trayes on Zoom, who spoke about the End of Life Choice Act.  The clear message was that this is a complicated and multifaceted issue.  Her book ‘The Final Choice’ is selling well in book stores and online https://www.thefinalchoice.nz/

James Wheeler Davidson – The Marco Polo of Rotary International
On Monday I participated in a Zoom call with 42 participants, all celebrating the achievements of James Wheeler Davidson.  James was one of two Canadians who started the four initial Rotary Clubs in Australasia in 1921 – Sydney, Melbourne, Wellington and Auckland.   In 1929, at a personal cost to himself of $250,000, James set out on an extended world trip promoted by Paul Harris himself, to establish Rotary Clubs around the world.  The Rotary Clubs on the Zoom call were all founded by this renowned explorer, who had previously visited even the North Pole.  We heard from Presidents from Athens, Cairo, Jerusalem, Bombay, Madras, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne, Wellington, to name just a few.

Mana Tangata
I’m delighted to report that we have received the first draft of the New Zealand Rotary history book, which is currently being reviewed and it looks fantastic.  My thanks to Past President Jim Johnston, who has reviewed it and found its contents extremely interesting.

ERKs – Additional Equipment Needed
The Rotary Club of Ellerslie Sunrise, who is currently overseeing the packing of the next batch of 1000 Emergency Response Kits (ERKs) is seeking some additional equipment as follows, between now and the end of October:
  1. A roller conveyor belt. To run the ERKs boxes along during packing. Ideally with rollers about 200 – 300mm above floor level. Width – minimum of about 250mm. Length - we’d take whatever we could get but 20m or 30m of it would be just great.
  2. Another pallet jack (or two). We have one already but a couple more would help things run more smoothly – for both the ERK box packing and the shipping container loading.
Delivery to our packing warehouse in East Tamaki would be fantastic otherwise they are sure they could magic up a trailer and come and collect the item/s.  If you are able to help, then please contact David Broadhead on 021 324 762.

Emergency Response Kits are a ‘first response’ resource distributed to affected families in the South Pacific, immediately following a disaster to support them through the first days.  A family can construct basic shelter, keep themselves protected from the elements and utilise the immediate survival items that are included.  The value of a kit including container, contents, freight and storage is approximately NZ$600. The project has been encouraged by the NZ Government, who often provides transportation, logistical and financial support.  ERKs are prepositioned in Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands, to enable prompt distribution throughout Polynesia and Melanesia, with back up supplies retained in Auckland, where the kits are packed by Rotarians and supporters.
