Next Monday’s meeting (10 August) will be held via Zoom, 12.15 for a 12.30pm start.  Being the 2nd Monday of the month, we will have an out of town speaker – Prof James Renwick from Wellington’s Victoria University, who will present some of the science on climate change.  The following is the Zoom link and please forward to friends or family who are interested in learning more about this important subject.  It could be a lively session!

Dr Renwick’s specialty is climate change.  James is a well-known NZ science communicator. The citation for his 2018 Prime Minister's Science Prize for Communication stated that he "communicates with warmth, humour and positivity, while always being clear about the seriousness of the issue".  James was a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 4th and 5th Assessment Reports and worked for NIWA for 20 years.

Last week we heard from Alexis Pritchard, a retired New Zealand Olympic female boxer, who won a medal at the 2018 Commonwealth games.  She spoke very well of her journey, with specific comments on the importance on attitude and mental approaches to difficult situations.

Lunch with Sir Stephen Tindall at the Northern Club on August 17 looks like it will be a good event.  Our current registrations are around 100 people.   As we may soon run out of space, please make sure that Jacqui is aware of your interest in attending – you need to book!

On August 24 we are looking to break our pattern of Zoom and physical meetings, as we have Chlöe Swarbrick as our speaker.  The venue for this meeting has yet to be confirmed, but we are hoping to have it at AUT as a trial.  Venue details for this meeting will be distributed later next week once everything has been confirmed.

On August 31 we are looking to have an evening social event with partners and friends as the Royal NZ Yacht squadron.  Format and costs are still being worked on, but please keep this free in your diaries.

If you are interested in hearing The Rt Hon Sir John Key speak to the Parnell Rotary Club at breakfast at 7am on Wednesday 2nd September in Gladstone Rd in Parnell, then please let Jacqui in the office know.

I am delighted that on 7 September at The Northern Club, we have confirmed Roger Partridge, Chair of the NZ Initiative, as our speaker.  Roger comes from distinguished legal career and was Chair of Bell Gully.  The work of the NZ Initiative on how we recover from the impacts of Covid is particularly appropriate.

As we all know, this is a big year for us with our centenary next year.  Work on the History Project continues apace.  We also have a District Conference to organise under the guidance of District Governor, Craig Horrocks.  Obviously Covid has changed our world.  A number of us reviewed and were most impressed with facilities available at the soon to be opened Park Hyatt hotel in the Viaduct, and this is a possible location for the conference.  Watch this space!

Regards
Tony Caughey
